99.9 Kiss Country puts on one of the best events every single year and brings all of our favorite country artists to South Florida for one huge all-day concert!
How could anyone pass up an event like KISS’ Chili Cookoff? This year we had huge stars such as Maddie & Tae, Dan + Shay, Chris Young, Jake Owen, and Little Big Town! Chili took over C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, FL and held 20,000+ country-loving, chili-eating people in its bed of unlimited grass. Lucky for us, there was a nice cold front that had come in earlier in the week that kept the whole day at Chili cool and heat free with frequent breeze blowing in.
Maddie & Tae kicked off the whole event with their hit songs “Shut Up And Fish“, “Fly“, and “Girl In A Country Song“. We even were treated to a few covers from the ACM nominated duo as they took on Justin Timberlake‘s “Mirrors” and Rihanna‘s “Umbrella“!
Dan + Shay took to the Chili stage right after the girls kicked things off and brought the energy as both Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney worked the whole entirety of the stage area. It’s absolutely crazy how much energy and passion this duo puts into their performances and let us just say that their vocals definitely don’t suffer as they both absolutely deliver with finesse every single time. The guys also performed covers of popular songs like Journey‘s “Anyway You Want It“, Bon Jovi‘s “You Give Love A Bad Name“, “Pour Some Sugar On Me” by Def Leppard, and even Taylor Swift‘s “Bad Blood” that had the old soul in all of us jamming out completely and screaming lyrics at the tops of our lungs. Check out the Journey cover below!
Also, if you’ve noticed that Dan + Shay haven’t been putting out new music lately it’s because they’ve been working on a whole new album for the 2016 year! Smyers and Mooney played their new song “Partner In Crime” for us and we have an exclusive clip of that below in our Chili Cookoff recap video!
Chris Young went on after Dan + Shay and let us just say that you would’ve never suspected that the country artist had an eye infection with the kind of performance he gave! Young announced on Saturday night that he indeed did have an eye infection (see picture right) but insisted that the show must go on! What a guy!
Chris performed his hits “I’m Comin’ Over“, “You“, “Voices” and more which just drove the South Florida crowd nuts as he gave the perfect set for couples all around cookoff.
Jake Owen had to be one of the most highly anticipated acts of the day as everyone knows, he sure knows how to put on one hell of a show and have some fun on stage! Owen pulled out all the stops when it came to making the stage at the Chili Cookoff more like home with his very own sandy carpet to look like sand from the beach, artificial palm trees, tiki bars, and even his bulldog made a cameo on stage. Sadly, Jake’s dog Merle got sick onstage halfway through his set and had to be taken off stage. Such a bummer!
Jake did play some of our favorites from him to make up for the recent departure of Merle though. Owen serenaded the crowd with “Beachin“, “Anywhere With You“, and more while the whole park belted out every lyric without missing a word or beat. Since this day seemed like the perfect day to bring out some covers for the country artists gracing the stage, Owen also performed Justin Bieber‘s “Love Yourself” and the most epic rendition of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song! Check out the live videos below!
Also, since the event was clearly in the beginning of the year, most of the artists brought some new tunes to share with the crowd and let’s just say Jake has some new hits on his hands. Jake’s new songs that we heard are “Good Company“, “When You Really Love Someone“, and “American Country Love Song” so make sure to keep an ear out for those on your radio soon!
To close out the eventful day was the one and only, Little Big Town! LBT kept it simple onstage with four microphone stands, a drum kit, and some backing lights but they most definitely let the music do all the talking. The Grammy nominated group performed their hits such as “Girl Crush“, “Day Drinking“, and more that ended the day perfectly.
I give KISS 99.9’s Chili Cookoff an absolute 10/10 when it comes to fun, music, and overall “Wow” factor simply because there’s no other events around South Florida that give you all of that for under about $60 (for the whole day!). A definite must-see and I am proud to say this was my 8th Chili Cookoff and I’m already putting bets on who they’re bringing out for the 2017 year!
See you all there next January!
